Nick No jail after all
(Posted/Updated: Tuesday, 5/13/2008 10:06:10 PM)
So I went to the courthouse in The Colony and told them I couldn't pay my fine for my speeding ticket. I put my hands out so they could cuff me and take me to jail but they didn't. Instead they asked me if I wanted to do a payment plan. I guess when it comes down to it I really don't want to do any hard time so I filled out the payment plan paperwork and went on my way. Painless.

Nick Jail time for Nick?
(Posted/Updated: Friday, 5/9/2008 9:52:32 AM)
I was driving home from my brother's wedding a few weekends ago when I got a wild hair and decided to gun it on the Bush. It's funny because I really don't speed that often but I guess I was feeling pretty good because the wedding was a lot of fun and it was late and the freeway was pretty clear so I got her up over 90.

Not that I speed that often, but most of the time if I do I only do it for really short stretches and get lucky where the cops are concerned. Not this time, though. He stopped me going 93. 93 sucks because it's too fast to even take defensive driving. Luckily I passed field sobriety so no DWI.

Monday is my day in court. I'm totally broke, though, so paying the ticket is not an option. I'm thinking about sitting it out. I'm kind of excited about the prospect of finally serving some hard time. lol!

Nick My jinx worked!
(Posted/Updated: Wednesday, 5/7/2008 3:13:36 PM)
G got mad at me in the guest book for dissing the Stars, and I deserve it I guess, but I could just say I was trying to jinx us into winning but I really wasn't. Hockey is officially exciting now, though. Playing Pittsburgh for the Cup would be especially cool since we have relatives there. If we make it past Detroit I don't think either one of those Pennsylvania teams will be a problem.

In other news, unless I shit a grand out of my ass in the next two weeks, I really don't think there's much I can do now to save my car from repossession. I better get the shit out of it that I need, huh? I wonder how repos work? Has anyone out there ever had their car repossessed? Right now the bank has no idea WHERE the car is so I guess that would be the first thing the repo man would have to figure out. I wonder how long it will take him (or her) to find the car? Do you think I should start a fight with the repo man when he tries to come and take it? I need to get me a mean ole' hound to sick on him when he comes around.

Nick Choke city
(Posted/Updated: Saturday, 5/3/2008 7:40:18 AM)
Man, talk about a city that's snake-bit. The Stars had 10 minutes left to close out the Sharks last night and couldn't make it happen. Now the Sharks have all the momentum and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if we did what no hockey team has done in 33 years and blow a 3-0 lead in a series.

It seems like our sports teams in Dallas try to one-up each other in terms of how bad they can choke. It's like "Oh, yeah, you lost to an 8th seed in the first round? Well, watch this. We blew a 3-0 lead in a best-of-seven. I know it's not quite as bad but we had to do something horrible. It's OUR time to suck now."

I really need to find a new city to embrace as my sports town. I'm tired of backing perennial losers.

Nick Learning Perl
(Posted/Updated: Friday, 5/2/2008 9:29:08 AM)
A new client of mine has a web site that uses Perl on the back end. So for fun, I decided to learn the language. Here's the output from my first Perl attempt:

CGI Error

The specified CGI application misbehaved by not returning a complete set of HTTP headers.

Ha ha. I suck at Perl so far.

Nick Google docs
(Posted/Updated: Friday, 4/25/2008 3:53:56 PM)
Another pretty cool thing I'm using these days is Google docs. I just used it recently to generate a quote for a client and share the quote document with them by simply adding their email address. When you share the document the application sends an email to them with a link they can click on to view the quote. How easy is that?

I also use Google docs to create spreadsheets to keep track of how much money I owe everyone and how soon it will be before my car is repossessed or I get thrown out. The spreadsheet is telling me that my car is going to get picked up in about three weeks (assuming they can find it) and I'm going to be thrown out at about the same time. Fortunately I may see some income before then and be able to avoid those unfortunate events but only time will tell. It would make for an interesting 43rd birthday if nothing else. That IS how old I'm going to be, right? I'm losing track now.

Nick Safari
(Posted/Updated: Friday, 4/25/2008 9:00:30 AM)
Every now and then an Apple window pops up on my screen wanting me to install the new version of I-Tunes and other various Apple stuff. I usually go ahead and do it so it the pop-up will go away. I had been avoiding installing "Safari", the Apple browser, but I finally installed that as well and it rocks! I have no idea why Safari works so much better in terms of response than I.E. or Firefox but it does. Plus it has much cooler, cleaner graphics. I recommend downloading Safari and giving it a try. It's pretty sweet.

Nick I love beer
(Posted/Updated: Thursday, 4/17/2008 9:13:30 PM)
Beer is so weird. It has the opposite effect on me. If I'm really tired, like I should be right now, I can have a few beers and I'm wide awake. But not only that, I'm energized and I enjoy everything more. I don't particularly like to watch SportsCenter but if I have three or four beers it becomes the best show on television. Actually every show becomes the best show on television.

Now I know that I'm not alone in this and I'm sure that's why there are millions of alcoholics in the world, functioning or otherwise, but it still intrigues me. And certainly it intrigues me now since I'm on my fourth beer in the last hour or so.

I'm too interested in what's going to happen in episode 35 of Weeds to continue this train of thought so I'm just going to watch Weeds now. I will say that alcohol is pretty much better than any other form of intoxicant the world has to offer but recent events have discouraged me from getting behind the wheel anymore when I decide to partake.

Milton Bradley (funny name) walked 5 times in a row in tonight's Rangers game. I'm sure that MUST be a record for one game. But I wonder what the ML record is for walks in a row? I tried to google it but no dice. My guess is that the Babe holds the record.

Nick Hands I lose amuse me more now
(Posted/Updated: Wednesday, 4/16/2008 8:09:22 PM)
So as I've taken up poker as more of a vocational activity lately I've noticed that it's the hands that I don't win that are more interesting to me than the ones I do. I think it's because if I'm beat I'm usually beat in some very odd way that defies reason (and the odds) so it's intriguing. Like this one that came around last night.

It was a limit game and I held a pair of 8's. Another guy had a pair of Kings and another guy had K-10. This was a very hyper-agressive limit table so we get the pot capped pre-flop. At a normal table I wouldn't be in a capped pot pre-flop with only 8's, but these guys were crazy. They were raising A-K and less, so it made sense to go with 8's and see if I could trip up. The flop came 10-8-7. I hit my trips. There was a slight chance someone either had the straight already or was drawing at it but I figured I wasn't going to worry about that and just pay them off if they had the balls to go with J-9 or 6-9 pre-flop in a capped pot. I was really hoping the board would pair so I didn't have to worry about it. I bet my set, and then the hyper-agressive player with K-10 raised it. The next dude (whom I still have no idea what HE was holding) called the raise and the KK re-raised. I capped that pot and everyone called. At this point I still wasn't too concerned because I figured someone probably had a 10 with a good kicker and someone else probably had an overpair. I also figured the other dude was probably chasing a straight or flush or something. The turn was a 5, which wasn't too scary. I bet again and this time I'm pretty sure it was just called around.

Now here's the funny part. The river is a King. The KK hit a one-outer. The funnier part, though, is that the K-10 hit two-pair and thought he was good when he was in third place. I didn't put anyone on KK so I bet, the idiot K-10 actually raised and luckily the KK only called. I called and lost. Trip Kings against trip 8's.

That hand should've made me a bunch of money but that right there (as they say) is poker. I congratulated the KK on his odds-defying river King and went on to gradually win a bunch of his money back later.

I'm taking a night off from the tables tonight to get drunk and watch the Mavs hopefully secure a first round matchup against the cinderella Hornets. Go Mavs!

Nick The dichotomy of dust
(Posted/Updated: Tuesday, 4/8/2008 9:22:33 PM)
On a cieling fan, dust accumulates on the side of the blade that's spinning. But strangely enough, the dust accumulates most when the blade is stopped. Apparently dust attracts more dust. If you have a ceiling fan that rotates both ways you can reduce the total amount of dust. But then you will have dust on both sides of the blade. It's easier to clean one side.

If you're still wondering where the "dichotomy" lies in this you're not alone. I was wondering the same thing.

The truth is that there probably IS no dichotomy after all. I just thought "the dichotomy of dust" was a cool title for a post.

Ha. There's a minute of your life you can't get back.

Nick 24-hour fast food rocks!
(Posted/Updated: Tuesday, 4/8/2008 7:29:46 AM)
So last night was a nice night for me monetarily so to reward myself I decided to pick up some breakfast taquitos from Whataburger at 1:30 a.m. or so. I took the Swisher road exit which is the first exit north of the lake. I had every intention of going to Whataburger because I thought that was my only choice at this late hour. But no. Turns out that ALL the fast food restaurants on this exit are open 24 hours. Riteous. I had my pick of Burger King, Jack in the Crack, McDonalds, AND Taco Bell. Talk about happy. I was elated!

I picked Jack, of course, because everybody knows his egg rolls rock. So I got three egg rolls, two tacos, came home and feasted while watching episode 27 of Weeds, and passed out.

It's a wonderful life.

Nick Mavs win finally!
(Posted/Updated: Monday, 4/7/2008 7:19:13 AM)
Now we're on our way. Finally a win against a decent team on the road. I think one more loss in last minute fashion and we may have just been completely sunk mentally. So that basically locks 7th and a 1st round against either the Lakers or Spurs. It's hard to say which one right now because now they're both going to dump the remainder of their games so they don't have to play us. The most likely scenario is the Lakers since it's harder for them to dump games on purpose than it is for the Spurs. Plus they're most likely going to win their division which automatically puts them ahead of the Spurs.

I don't mind a first round matchup with the Lakers without Bynum. They really can't hold their own against us without him. If we can just snake out one win against them on their home court we'll advance probably. I'm much more excited now for the playoffs to start since it looks like we're coming together at the perfect time.

Go Mavs!

So you know how some people have been fired from their jobs because of stuff they've posted on blogs, etc? Even as I write this I could be falling into that category because I'm in the process of looking for a new job. Even though this is strictly a personal web site and doesn't reflect the professionalism I've always maintained in the workplace, it could be used against me I suppose.

I just have to hope that whomever may visit this site looking to hire me has a sense of humor. By the way, if you are someone looking to hire me, I programmed this whole web site with ASP in Visual Studio and it uses SQL server on the backend, so if anything it proves that I can do what I say I can do (regardless of content.)

On a seperate note, it's April fools day. And as much as it may seem like me trying to find a new full-time job is a joke, it's really not.
